Craggy Island is Back!

One of Scotland's most popular triathlons is finally taking place this October after a Covid break. The award winning Craggy Island Triathlon takes place on the incredible unspoilt Hebridean island of Kerrera, off Scotland's stunning West coast, and just a few miles from Cologin. Unique in the UK and possibly the World, the race starts on the mainland and contestants swim to the island to complete the rest of the race! Once on the island the bike and run sections of the triathlon take place and these are entirely...

History on our Doorstep at Kilbride

Historic Kilbride is just a short pleasant stroll across the fields next to the pub. Now that Covid restrictions have lifted this ancient kirkyard is happy to welcome visitors so do take a wander and explore the Church of Saint Bride the Virgin in Lorn. We are so lucky to have a monument of national importance, which has been a site of Christian worship since at least the 6th century, on our doorstep. It was one of Argyll’s important churches from the early middle ages to the...

Business Opportunity at Cologin

A full year of operating under Covid restrictions has led Michael to reconsider his options and sadly the Hewitt family have given notice and will move on at the end of this season. Whilst we (and our guests) will miss the team we understand the challenges that they have faced since the pandemic and we appreciate all the work they've done to keep the pub/restaurant open in uncertain times. However, we refuse to see this as a set back and believe that this presents a once in a...

Lockdown refurbishments!

Well we've finally come out of lockdown and it's great to see customers back at the Barn Bar and our lodges fully booked for the May bank holiday weekend. We've been busy this spring and all of our one bedroom chalets have been completely stripped and refurbished from top to bottom. New floors, soft furnishings, bathrooms and kitchens and doors for numbers 1-4 and a new hallway for Cruachan. With so many more two bedroom lodges we had to select those that really needed the most TLC...

And We’re Back!

All of Scotland will enter level 3 on 26th April when travel restrictions lift and we can welcome visitors from across the UK. Self-catering accommodation must follow the rules for indoor socialising for private dwellings so for the farmhouse we have a maximum number of 8 from 3 households even when we reach level 0 - which is planned for June. The rules for the Barn Bar don't quite align with the indoor socialising rules as the Barn is a public place so you can gather for a...

Al Fresco Shower?

Okay - we admit it’s primarily for our furry friends but if you need to wash off your welly boots then feel free! We are blessed to have wonderful woodland walks through Cologin Forest and over the hills surrounding our farm and we want our guests to take full advantage of the great outdoors.  After so many months of lockdown and being restricted it’s great to have the freedom to explore - but please don’t forget the countryside code and respect our neighbour’s fields and keep your...

What3words Location for Cologin

Finding Cologin is now easy with the what3words location app. According to the app - using what3words is the 'simplest way to talk about location'. Finding Cologin by postcode has always been a challenge for our guests as PA344SE is not accurate enough to specify our precise location as it covers most of our glen. This makes it hard to find places and prevents people from describing exactly where help is needed in an emergency. That was the thinking behind what3words and the solution was both simple and...

Forestry and Land Scotland – Cologin Forest

Although we're currently closed at Cologin the site has been busy recently as Scottish Forestry have taken advantage of the restrictions to take a long overdue look at Cologin forest. The track to the loch has been closed whilst they undertake some tree felling. Hopefully, once this thinning has taken place more sunlight will reach the ground and allow for a less muddy walk for both humans and canines. The forest has not been thinned for many years and whilst it is inconvenient for locals and Obanites...

Good riddance 2020

After the most challenging year Cologin has ever endured our family welcomed 2021 with fairly subdued celebrations. News of the vaccine offered hope for a final end to the Coronavirus pandemic, but restrictions meant we had to close our business once again. Now our country is effectively locked down and we must stay at home in one final push to end this madness. As soon as we are able to reopen we will and until then we have closed our booking system for January and will update via...

Covid Christmas @ Cologin

If you are looking to get away in your Christmas bubble then you can book a property at Cologin for a brief 5 day period from the 23rd to the 28th December with up to three households. However, in Scotland the rules are a wee bit complicated as there are still travel restrictions and basically if you intend to form a Christmas bubble with friends and family then at least one of the households must live in Argyll and Bute to book a property at Cologin. For families...
