Mary’s Planning an Island Retirement!

Our Harris born and raised chef/manager of the Barn Bar is planning on returning to her island home at the end of this season leaving the way clear for a new, ambitious entrepreneur to take on the Barn Bar as a stand alone business. The Barn is at the heart of Cologin and it's integral to the operation of the lodges and the social life of the glen. We will miss Mary and her extended family - many of whom have served behind the bar, waited tables or...

Hamish and the Drover Wire Sculpture

To celebrate Jim’s 60th birthday earlier this year I decided to do something a wee bit different! I have always admired the sculptural wire work of local artist Tara Coggans but felt that for a big birthday I needed something of a statement piece and asked Tara if she could create a lifesize wire sculpture. We kicked around some ideas and given  The Barn Bar’s history as a cattle byre and Cologin’s location on an ancient drovers’ road, we soon agreed on a Highland cow and a...

Highlands and Islands Music & Dance Festival

One week to go before Oban comes alive to the sound of Highland pipes and the rustle of dancers adjusting their swords as they prepare to compete in the annual Highland and Islands Music & Dance Festival which takes place at venues around town from Friday 4th May. The festival began in 1984, when its aims were to encourage young talent to 'participate in and develop the traditional arts of music and dance of the highlands and islands of Scotland'. Since then the event has developed to include...

Highland Cattle Sales

Hairy cows were the order of the day yesterday at the Highland Cattle Sales just up the road from us here at Cologin. Highland cattle, instantly recognisable with their long horns and flowing coats, spread from the west of Scotland throughout the world. Written records go back to the 18th century and the Highland Cattle Herd Book, first published in 1885, lists pedigrees since that time. This year it's the Highland Cattle Society's 150th anniversary and the February bull sale in Oban was another record breaking show. The Highlander...

Happy New Year – Here’s to 2018!

We have had an incredibly busy festive season this year and Hogmanay was busy with old friends and new acquaintances. For the first time in 35 years we were missing our regular New Year guests the Shaws and the Gillespies who decided that the journey north was going to be too much for them. We inherited these lovely old customers from Henry and Val when we moved to Cologin so it did feel like the end of an era without them. Wishing all our old friends (as that...
