Why Oban for your Scottish STAYCATION?

Nestled on the west coast and known as the ‘Gateway to the Isles’, Oban is a popular tourist destination. Just 2.5 miles from our base at Cologin, we share five reasons on why it’s the perfect place for a Scottish staycation.

As you plan your Scottish stay and before you set off for your break, we encourage you to check the latest guidelines and restrictions in Scotland.

1. So many great things to do

As the largest town in the area, Oban has many attractions to enjoy including a cinema, sports centre, swimming pool, sailing club, golf course and charming shops and galleries. No matter what type of traveller you are, there’s something for everyone.

If you’re a history lover, be sure to visit the amazing castles and towers, such as the iconic McCaig’s Tower, Dunollie Castle and nearby Kilchurn Castle.

2. The amazing coastal scenery

Oban is surrounded by miles of dramatic shores and beautiful countryside and is the perfect place to switch off and reconnect with nature. Take a stroll along the waterfront, passing the quaint harbour and sandy beach while watching the world go by. Why not hire a bicycle and take in the amazing sights along gentle coastal paths? If you’re feeling more adventurous, head to the Puffin Dive Centre, where you can scuba dive amongst varieties of local fish, crabs and even an octopus if you’re lucky. And of course there’s Basking Shark Scotland if you want the ultimate bucket list experience!

3. Its renowned food and drink

If you’re a seafood lover, you’re in luck! Oban was dubbed the ‘Seafood Capital of Scotland’, and it’s easy to see why. Sample the catch of the day at the local restaurants and eateries in town or the surrounding areas.

One of our personal favourites is to pick up a Seafood Platter from the ‘green shack’ on the pier. The Oban Seafood Hut is a local institution and its a ‘must visit’ if you are taking a stroll around the bay. Check out live lobsters, oysters and crabs and enjoy freshly booked mussels and scallops. At Cologin, we have our own food and drinks venue on site called The Barn Bar, which serves up traditional Scottish cuisine made from the finest local produce.

4. The cosy accommodation

At Cologin, you’ll find cosy self-catering chalets, a quaint cottage and a farmhouse complete with its own wood-fired hot tub. Just a 5-minute drive from Oban, we provide you with the perfect base for unwinding and exploring the local area, with all the home comforts you need and more.

5. Its proximity to the islands

One of the best things about Oban is that you can enjoy your very own island-hopping adventure. Take a boat to Staffa, Iona or Mull and explore what each unique islands has to offer, or make a day of it and visit all three with a guided tour. Boat tours tend to book up fast and depart Oban in the early morning so be sure to set your alarm.

The nearby island of Kerrera is also well worth a visit, with a stunning circular coastal walk, cute Tea Rooms and the atmospheric ruins of Gylen Castle to explore. You can walk to the island over the hill from Cologin , but that will be a full day out so be prepared for tired legs.
