The Barn is at the rustic heart of Cologin and describing its unique ambience is not easy – suffice to say that once you’ve been you will return! Full of character – and characters – the Barn Bar is run for us by father and son team Michael and Glen Hewitt. Michael has been in Oban for many years and has an outside catering business and decades of  experience with pubs and restaurants.  In the past, he was our preferred supplier for spit roasts for functions at Cologin and when Mary retired in October 2018 Michael was the natural choice to take on the operation of the Barn Bar full time.

With just one full year at the Barn under their belt the team have had the challenge of Coronavirus and a lockdown for 4 months. The Barn has now reopened with social distancing measures in place. There’s an all-seated, table service only policy and a slightly reduced menu. Pets are still welcome and the Barn will be open daily throughout August.  The Barn has signed up to the government discount scheme so please follow the Barn’s Facebook page for more news.

The Barn was once the cattle byre for the farm and who knew that it’s cattle stalls would become so important for social distancing! The average length of a cow is around 2m and that’s handy as the booths are now perfectly positioned to keep guests safe.

We do hope that as this pandemic ends the Barn will get back to doing what it does best – providing a wonderful social hub for our locals, Cologin guests and Obanites. Please do support the Barn when you visit. And remember it is a seasonal facility and even in a normal year if you are staying at Cologin outwith July or August it might not be open full time. It is demand led so if you are booking a group of lodges even in the middle of winter do get in touch as the Barn can always open for a private function.

Do check back as we update this page regularly and will add more of Michael and Glen’s plans for the Barn as they unfold for the rest of this Coronavirus challenged year.

Covid Update 10/09/20: Tables are now restricted to a group of 6 (adults and children over 12) from no more than 2 family bubbles/households. Children under 12 do not count but the table booking must still comply with the restriction to 2 households/bubbles.
Masks must now be worn when entering/leaving or moving around the Barn.

Here's what folk are saying about our award winning Barn Bar.
Highly recommended for food

The Barn serves a range of food and is delicious to eat. Very reasonably priced and so worth booking. There is a log burning stove inside and out in the conservatory. They start serving meals at midday and non residents are welcome.

New Years Eve

Had a fantastic New Years Eve at The Barn, food was excellent, atmosphere was great, the entertainment was second to none. This was the way to bring in the New Year. Fantastic well done Mary and staff.

A must-have-been-there for all visitors of Argyll

Since I heard about "The Barn" some years ago, I have always spent a lovely Sunday afternoon there during my yearly holidays in Scotland. The place is unique: Delicious food and drink comes along with the sweet sound of the musicians who meet there completely relaxed on Sundays.
